Golf Cart and ATV Insurance in Ocala

Some tasks and trips may not be suitable for your car, or may enable a more enjoyable option. The convenience and breezy nature of golf carts and ATVs may make them an attractive choice for more than just off-roading and getting between holes on the links. But regardless of what you use these vehicles for, you’ll need to account for possible risks and exposures by understanding your insurance needs.

Are Golf Carts and ATVs Required to Have Insurance?

Insurance-related laws regarding golf carts and ATVs can vary significantly. In Florida, golf cart insurance is generally not required, but you’ll want to make sure that your vehicle doesn’t technically qualify as a low-speed vehicle (LSV) through various modifications and specifications. For example, golf carts should not be able to exceed 20 mph to be classified as such, whereas LSVs can reach up to 25 mph. LSVs must be titled, registered and insured if operated on public roads. Local ordinances or HOAs may also require golf cart liability coverage on designated roads.

ATVs may be subject to different rules. Florida does not have a blanket requirement for ATV insurance, but ATVs operated on public property must be titled, and certain parks, trails or landowners may require riders to carry liability coverage. Florida’s personal injury protection (PIP) requirement does not apply to ATVs, since they are not licensed for highway use.

What Can My Policy Cover?

Even if you’re not subject to legal requirements, retaining insurance for ATVs and golf carts is highly advisable. Consider the following options:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage can assist with costs if you’re at fault for an accident that injures another motorist or pedestrian.
  • Property damage liability coverage can financially protect you from accidents where you damage someone else’s vehicle, building or fence.
  • PIP can assist with you and your passengers’ losses, including medical bills and wage replacement, if you’re injured in an accident, regardless of fault.
  • Collision coverage can help repair or replace your vehicle if it’s damaged in a crash.
  • Comprehensive coverage may offset losses arising from fires, theft, vandalism, severe weather and other noncollision incidents.
